Starting methods of induction motor

In this article we discuss the various starting methods for induction motors and the need for starters. First the starting principle is discussed along with the types of starting methods. Then the construction and working of the DOL (direct on-line) starter and the Star-Delta starter are shown.

It is not advisable to start induction motors of higher ratings (generally above 25kW) directly from the mains supply. Various starting methods of induction motors are described below.

We use starters in order to limit the high starting current.

We use different starters for both the type of three phase induction motors.

Let us consider first squirrel cage type of induction motor. For slip-ring motors- rotor resistance starting. For squirrel-cage motors - Direct-on -line starting - Star-delta starting . A 3-phase induction motor is theoretically self starting.

This will link and cut the rotor conductors . Keywords: Direct-on-Line (DOL) starter, Star-delta starter, auto- transformer starter, rotor resistance starter, starting current, starting torque, starters for squirrel cage and wound rotor induction motor , need for starters. Among all these types of motors, a few types of motors required to be operated with certain conditions. Keywords: Single-phase induction motor , starting torque, main and auxiliary windings, starting methods , split-phase, . This video looks at some of the methods used to start induction motors. It defines the terms direct on line starting (DOL), which suffers from the problem of mechanical shock and large starting currents. It presents the following methods for starting : star-delta starting and series resistor starting.

Induction Motor Starting Methods ? Different starting methods are employed for starting induction motors because they draw more starting current during starti. The different methods of starting an induction motor 1. Abstract: Many methods can be used to start large AC induction motors. Choices such as full voltage, reduced voltage either by autotransformer or wye-delta, a soft starter, or usage of an adjustable speed drive can all have potential advantages and trade offs.

Reduced voltage starting can lower the starting torque and help . NPTEL provides E-learning through online Web and Video courses various streams. These motors are typically used in applications such as desk fans and record players, as the required starting torque is low, and the low efficiency is tolerable relative to the reduced cost of the motor and starting method compared to other AC motor designs. Larger single phase motors are split-phase .
