How to test fan capacitor

The tester must have the ability to measure ohms . This one covers testing of the start capacitor. I have learned in many years of service and repair. For better safety, use 24V DC instead of 230V AC.

Start capacitors are common in home appliances and all sorts of HVAC equipment.

Capacitors are voltage storage devices used in electronic circuits, such as those found in heating and air conditioning fan motors and compressors.

Problems with motors may actually be within the start capacitor rather than the fan motor itself.

Many motors use start capacitors to regulate the electrical components of the motor during the start process. Testing the start capacitor before you throw away the motor saves the expense of purchasing another . A capacitor is an electrical device that stores an electrical charge. The first rating is the unit's capacitance which is given in microfarads (mfd).

They have two electrical ratings.

Discharge the capacitor as described in the warning above. When measuring low capacitance values, the Relative mode can be used to remove the capacitance of the test leads. I use the Ohm and MFD functions of the multi.

I ohmed out the run capacitor as your video demonstrated and got identical - herm goo fan bad.

Even better, cost when our AC service company fixed the identical problem three years . Be sure to kill power before starting to test cap. InspectAPedia tolerates no conflicts of interest. We have no relationship with advertisers, products, or services discussed at this website.

Faulty run and start capacitors are one of the biggest cause to AC motor failure. This is the Airmaster (labeled ABC Fan Co) pulled from the laundromat. Troubleshooting Ceiling Fans - Capacitors and Pull Chains - Duration: 2:08.

This is not an instructional video on how to . Why is my ceiling fan running on only one speed? How to check capacitors , standar dual and mars. The start capacitor provides the extra starting torque needed by the compressor to start under-load and is connected only during the start-up cycle.

A motor run capacitor is used in the blower fan circuit while the motor start capacitor is used in the compressor circuit.
