Wye wound stator

Wye wound stators are used in alternators that require high voltage output at low alternator speeds. Two windings are in series at any one time during charge output. A neutral wire can be provided on wye output side. Adding all three together produces the total AC output of the stator.


The two basic stator winding designs are delta wound and wye style.

Wye windings resemble the flux capacitor seen in Back .

For high Kv, wye wound motors, the wires can get very thick.

My experience with 3-phase cage induction motors is that they are 3-wire with three stator windings. Starting Theory of Wound -Rotor Induction Motors. To start the motor, all of the resistance of the wye -connected speed controller is inserted in the rotor circuit.


The voltage induced in the rotor develops currents in the rotor circuit. The rotor currents, how ever, are limited . Typical brushless motors are three phase machines with either wye or delta wound stators , with the vast majority of them being wye wound. The driving mechanism is the same for both. I also removed the wire holder off of the stator for ease of access. Right now the stator is wye wound.


We are going to rewire it so that it is delta wound. Winding single-phased ( wye -connected). A single-phased winding failure is the result of an open in one phase of the power supply to the motor. Stator Design Delta wound stators can be identified by having only three stator leads, and each lead will have the same number of wires attached.


Wye style has four stator leads. One of the leads is called the Neutral Junction. The Neutral Junction is common to all the other leads.


Two designs of stator winding are used . For the purpose of this article, we will stick with the series- and shunt- wound DC motor. A 3-phase induction motor can be further classified as delta wound or wye wound. While building custom motorcycles, I often add electrical accessories, and use high output stators (if available) to keep up with the increased electrical load.
