Difference between slip ring and squirrel cage motor

Squirrel Cage Induction Motor vs Slip Ring Induction Motor. SQUIRREL CAGE INDUCTION MOTOR : 1. Constructional feature is very simple. Starting torque is poor, while running torque is better.

Power factor is moderate(–).

One of the major difference between the slip ring and the squirrel cage motor is that the slip ring motor has an external resistance circuit for controlling the speed of the motor.

Whereas in squirrel cage motor , it is not possible to add any external circuit because the bar of the motor is permanently slotted at the end of the ring.

In slip ring induction motors the rotor is wound type. In the motor the slip rings , brushes are provided. Compared to squirrel cage rotor the rotor construction is not simple.

I would really like to see that you also cover single phase induction motors in detail.

Cylindrical laminated core rotor with heavy bars or . The advantages of squirrel - cage motors compared with the slip ring induction motors are given below. They are more robust and cheaper (ii) Comparatively they have higher efficiency and power factor (iii) Since the risk of sparking is eliminated by the absence of slip rings . First of all, both the motors are different from the construction and design point of view. Both types of IM have their pros and cons and characteristics.

Depending on that they have different applications in the day to day life.

Generally the squirrel cage motors have low starting torque but good running performance and hence it dominat. With the advent of variable-frequency solid-state power supplies, speed variation can be provided by the more reliable, less expensive squirrel - cage motor. One way is to short-circuit the slip rings . Slip rings are also used for DC excitation on AC machines.

Collector ring is not the correct w. Yes, wound-rotor motors have slip rings. Therefore slip ring motors and wound- rotor motors are the same. Know about the different winding slots, lamination of the stator and its construction. Also appreciate the rugged construction of squirrel cage rotor and know the spectacular reasons for the skewed .
