Working of dc servo motor

A servo motor is an electrical device which can push or rotate an object with great precision. If you want to rotate and object at some specific angles or distance, then you use servo motor. It is just made up of simple motor which run through servo mechanism.


Field control has some specific advantages over armature control and on the other hand armature control has also some specific advantages over field control. Which type of control should be applied to the DC servo motor , is being decided depending upon its specific applications.

Before understanding the working principle of servo motor we should understand first the basic of servomechanism.

The gear mechanism will take high input speed of the motor (fast) and at the output, we will get an .

The motor is attached by gears to the control wheel. Servo motors are DC motors that allows for precise control of angular position. Modern servomotors use rotary encoders, either absolute or incremental.


Absolute encoders can determine their position at power-on, but are more complicated and expensive. Incremental encoders are simpler, cheaper and work at faster speeds. DC Servo - motor : Unlike large industrial motors, dc servomotors are not used for continuous energy conversion. The basic operating principle is same as other electromagnetic motors. Design, construction and mode of operation are different . The rotors of this kind of motor are designed with long rotor . The encoder has the approximate sensor for telling the rotational speed and revolution per minute of the motor.
