Dungiven is an important part of the North Western Transport Corridor, connecting Belfast and the North West via Toome , Maghera and Dungiven. The main Belfast to Londonderry road begins as the Mmotorway which then becomes the Mas far as Randalstown. However the roads on each side are still single-carriageway.
The purpose of this scheme is to dual approximately 12km of the . The project is set to last four years and will cost £1million.

There is no legal challenge to this section of the scheme.

The existing single carriageway, Hillhead Road between The Creagh and the western end of the Castledawson Bypass , would be retained to provide local access to The Creagh and the surrounding area.
